10 years ago this weekend, I started This Week In Doctor Who as a guide to all known Doctor Who broadcasts around the world. To my surprise and delight, the column took off. The early help and support of Ken "KTEH" Patterson, TJ "Doo Wop 50" Lubinsky, Shaun "Gallifrey Convention" Lyon, and Dr. Siobahn "Nitro-9 Home Page" Morgan in the first days and months inspired me to keep going till the column worked.
No way I can compile a complete list of the people who have helped
This Week be the success it is, but I can do a partial list:
Jefferson Eng, David Thiel, David Brunt, Joey Reynolds (aka Joey
Donovan), Jason Fraser, Lee Whiteside, Eric Gjovaag, Sean Corcoran,
Mark Phippen, Lisa Elliott, many who I will remember 5 minutes after
the column goes out, and the thousands of people who read This Week
In Doctor Who (and Torchwood This Week) on Yahoo Groups, the Doctor
Who News Page formerly known as Outpost Gallifrey, other Yahoo
Groups, the Doctor Who Alliance (1998-2001 RIP), rec.arts.drwho ,
rec.arts.drwho.moderated , and mirrored on websites and RSS feeds all
over the place. Thanks, everybody!
I just tried to do a look back at the last 10 years. Maybe later this
Summer. The last 10 years are all here. Just read the old columns.
Series 4 has just ended in the UK, but for most of the world it is
still running/on the way. If you know what happens, please do not
spoil the events for people who are waiting for their broadcaster to
air the episodes. We should try to make the show as successful as
possible in as many countries as possible, so the stations will want
to buy the specials and Series 5 in 2010.
Lee Whiteside of http://www.sftv.org has a letter in the July 11
edition of Ask Matt Roush http://www.tvguide.com/Ask-Matt reminding
US audiences of the importance of getting the word out about Doctor
Who on SciFi. Since Doctor Who is not a show SciFi made, it can fall
between the cracks.
USA - SciFi http://www.scifi.com has updated their August schedule and given The Stolen Earth / Journey's End a 90 minute timeslot on August 1, 2008. The episode will air at 8:30PM and 11PM Eastern. This should enable the episode to air full length with no edits (sorry, banners on the screen and crunched closing credits do not count as edits, no matter how much we dislike the practices). Well done to SciFi for getting the correct version of the episode. ABC Australia, Prime New Zealand, and CBC Canada - your turns to step up and get the full version of {s[JourneysEnd}}.
I appeared on Shaun OMac's TV Talk radio show
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/shaunomac for the first half of the
second hour on Friday 11 July. It was a pleasant experience, and I
think I did my part to hype the Doctor Who episodes coming up on
SciFi. BTW, if you are a Doctor Who actor or writer, Shaun's show and
other talk programs in the USA don't get a lot of help from SciFi in
getting in contact for Who interviews. If you wanted to get on
Shaun's show to discuss your work on Doctor Who and other TV
projects, check his show out and e-mail him. His show goes where the
guests, callers, and people in the online chat go. This is the show
that started the Nuts campaign for Jericho. Anyone can call in - just
pointing out actors and writers to get some of them on his show. We
should seek out friendly places like this where people outside
regular US fans can be reached. Here's hoping for similar
opportunities in Australian and New Zealand media as the series plays
out in those regions.
UK - Radio 3 will have live coverage of a Doctor Who themed Prom
(concert) on Sunday 27 July from 11AM to 1PM BST. The concert will be
recorded for future TV broadcast. Freema Agyeman hosts, with an
appearance by David Tennant.
UK - Series 4 repeats begin on BBC Three
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree on Monday 14 July at 7PM with Partners
In Crime. Looks like it will be a four day a week schedule - Sunday,
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Special encore of The Stolen Earth
and Journey's End on BBC One this Sunday 13 July at 5:35PM BST.
UKTV Drama http://www.uktv.co.uk/drama continues airing one episode of Tom Baker a day most days in the 5AM hour this month. In August 1 to 6 episodes will air per day and the start time will vary to as early as 2:30AM. Looks like they are trying to race through the leftover airing rights they have. A repeat run of Series 1 and 2 (with some episode missing) begins on UKTV Gold http://www.uktv.co.uk/gold Monday 21 July at 7AM and 4PM. UKTV Drama and UKTV Gold are rebranding on 7 October. UKTV Gold becomes Gold and will focus on comedies. UKTV Drama becomes Alibi and focuses exclusively on crime dramas. UKTV Gold + 1's feed will become Watch, a channel for contemporary drama, including Torchwood. Neither Gold nor Watch will have a +1 timeshift channel.
SciFi Channel UK http://www.scifi.co.uk has a 3 day Bank Holiday weekend marathon of classic Doctor Who (23 to 25 August) coming up, which implies a new home for Classic Doctor Who in the UK as autumn approaches.
British Forces Broadcasting Service BFBS is trying something
interesting. BFBS 2 will begin airing The Dead Planet, the first
Dalek story from 1963/1964. One episode a week from Saturday 19 July.
Here's hoping more classic Who will follow.
Africa - BBC Prime Africa http://www.bbcprime.com begins its final
run of Doctor Who Series 1 before being eliminated and turned into
BBC Entertainment in the fall. 2 episodes and Confidential Cut Downs
Sundays at 5:30ishPM CAT starting on the 13th.
Torchwood schedule information is included in the Torchwood This Week
column http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood .
